Getting Accepted to the University of Michigan Gets Tougher Every Year!

University of Michigan

Applying to The University of Michigan continues to be more competitive year after year. Once again, for 2025, the University of Michigan set a new record for the number of students applying for admission with more than 115,000 prospective first year and transfer students seeking a spot for the fall 2025 term.

This is a 9.4% increase over last year’s then-record 105,142 applicants, a 22.5% increase from 2023, and a 65% increase from 2020.

With the admission rate at the University of Michigan now under 16%, getting the prized U-M offer of admission is becoming more elusive. A prospective student needs to submit a compelling application that includes more than high test scores and great grades – it needs to showcase why the student is the right choice for the University of Michigan.

Admission decisions were released in January 2025 for first-year students who applied by the November 1 early action (EA) admission deadline. EA applicants received one of three decisions: admit, deny, or postpone. Postponed EA and regular applicants (those who applied by February 1) will learn if they are admitted in early April.

As reported in the University Record: "Students and families from Michigan and around the world understand the profound impact and value of a University of Michigan education," said Adele C. Brumfield, vice provost for enrollment management.

"Our exceptional faculty, cutting-edge facilities and technologies designed to enhance the educational experience, and vibrant campus environment are just a few of the numerous factors driving the increasing interest in our university from high-achieving students."

Separately, Forbes recently named the University of Michigan as one of the “New Ivies.”

Of the nearly 8,900 new students who enrolled in the 2024 incoming class, slightly over half (52%) are Michigan residents.
